Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “Murata”), has received an “A”
*1 score on Climate Change, placing it on the A List, as well as an “A-” score on Water Security from the CDP, a global environmental non-profit that operates an environmental disclosure system.
In 2025, more than 22,100 companies disclosed information through CDP’s platform, and 20,000 of them were scored. Achieving an “A” places Murata among global leaders demonstrating comprehensive disclosure, mature environmental governance, and meaningful progress towards environmental resilience.
This is the fifth consecutive year that Murata has achieved the Leadership level on Climate Change and the third consecutive year that it has been selected for the A List, the highest honor. It is also the fourth time that Murata has achieved the Leadership level on Water Security.
*1 Disclosers are allocated one of eight letter scores ranging from the highest level, Leadership (A/A-), to Management (B/B-), Awareness (C/C-), and Disclosure (D/D-).
We believe that it is thanks to the initiatives outlined below, as well as the support and trust of our stakeholders, that we received such a high evaluation.
Going forward, Murata will continue to contribute to the reduction of environmental impact throughout society and to the resolution of social issues by generating a virtuous cycle of economic and social value through its unique products and technology.
■Murata’s climate-change-related targets and results
Murata has been pursuing activities to reduce the environmental impact of its manufacturing and selected “Create a decarbonized society” as a key issue in its management plan Medium-Term Direction 2027.
Most recently, in FY2024, the Murata Group as a whole achieved a renewable energy sourcing rate of 39.2% and a 35% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG
*2 emissions compared to FY2019. It is also mounting efforts related to Scope 3 and achieved a 24% reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions compared to FY2019.
In September 2024, Murata brought forward its schedule for achieving ”RE100”, an initiative aimed at converting the electricity used for business activities to 100% renewable energy, by fifteen years from FY2050 to FY2035. Alongside the acceleration of efforts to achieve RE100, Murata aims to achieve carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by FY2040 and throughout its entire supply chain including Scope 3 emissions by FY2050.
*2 GHG: abbreviation of Greenhouse Gases
■Murata’s climate-change-related initiatives
Murata is implementing diverse measures aimed at expanding its sourcing and use of renewable energy, including the creation and introduction of a control system that enables more effective and efficient utilization of solar power and storage batteries, as well as the execution of corporate PPAs. Furthermore, in addition to past energy-saving efforts focused on capital investment, we are working on new energy-saving measures utilizing in-company systems such as an internal carbon pricing (ICP) system and sustainable investment promotion system. We are also working to optimize the energy used for production by installing systems that visualize the status of plant equipment and facilities using wireless sensors developed by Murata.
Regarding Scope 3 reductions, we are discussing concrete proposals in collaboration with stakeholders including our customers, suppliers, and logistics partners. To reduce GHG emissions derived from purchased products and services, we are focusing on building relationships with our suppliers and will contribute to the creation of a sustainable supply chain by sharing the knowledge about energy saving and renewable energy that we have cultivated while accelerating the conversion to primary data. We will also contribute to further reductions in GHG emissions through measures such as modal shifting and reducing packaging materials.
Furthermore, Murata is working to conduct in-depth analysis of opportunities and risks in transition scenarios and disclose information related to governance and strategies based on the TCFD
*3.
*3 TCFD: abbreviation of Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures
■Status of Murata’s water-security-related initiatives
Murata regards water as a natural resource essential to our business activities. From the perspective of minimizing impacts on local communities and the environment, Murata has continually promoted the appropriate wastewater management, including reduction of water usage and water recycling. In recent years, as interest in conserving natural capital has grown and greater responses to water risks are required, Murata recognizes as a critical issue that its manufacturing both depends on water resources and may impact them.
Murata has advanced initiatives to promote the effective use of water resources at its sites around the world. Examples include achieving 100% in-process reuse of process wastewater, a 50% water recycling rate through the recirculation of industrial water, and a 80% year-on-year reduction in potable water costs through the recovery and reuse of wastewater.
While continuing companywide management, Murata is also moving forward with evaluations for the consideration of CBWTs
*4, which include the balance of water supply and demand as well as impacts on biodiversity and local communities. This helps Murata to identify business sites in relatively high water-stressed areas and to advance water reuse and wastewater reduction measures, together with technology development and process improvements, in order to achieve both stable operations and reduced impacts on local communities. As a companywide initiative, individual sites have also set voluntary standards that are stricter than regulatory limits and implemented measures to prevent outflow beyond their premises to thoroughly prevent accidental leakage of substances with a high environmental impact.
In addition to these continuous efforts, Murata is working to further enhance improvements at its sites, water risk assessments, and consolidation and disclosure of management conditions including consideration for biodiversity.
*4 Context-Based Water Targets. “Context” refers to regional and watershed characteristics.
